Features of The English Language

English is spoken extensively in different parts of the world. In total, 508 million people speak English. Due to its political, economic, scientific, cultural and military influence, as well as the British colonial expansion since the 18th and 19th centuries, the English language has spread worldwide. Currently, it is the primary language for international discourse and the lingua franca in many regions. The English language has been studied considerably; it is also the official language of several Commonwealth countries and is one of the six official languages of the European Union and many multinational organisations.

Brief history of the English language

The English language is a West Germanic language, a subcategory of the Germanic languages, which, in turn, are part of the Indo-European language family. How did English become a global language? Let’s take a further look into the history of this important global language.

In the beginning, during the period of Old English (450–1150), this language was composed of a set of dialects, among which featured the West Saxon dialect. Many other profound influences played their own part and added to the language, particularly Scandinavian conquerors (in the north and east of England, where they constituted a Danelagh or Danelaw because their laws prevailed over the Anglo-Saxon ones). Besides this influence, we must also consider the Normans and Germanic people who came to Britain between the eighth and eleventh centuries.

It was during the period of Middle English (1150–1500) that the English language, and more specifically, English grammar, started evolving with particular attention to syntax. While the British government and its wealthy citizens anglicised the language, Norman and French influences remained the dominant language until the 14th century.

Later on, Early Modern English (1500–1700) evolved. A significant aspect of this period was the fact that the English language underwent far-reaching sound changes, while its spelling remained steady to a large extent. It can be said that Modern English became recognisable during the creative period of William Shakespeare from the middle of the 16th century until the beginning of the 17th century. Also, the Renaissance influenced this period considerably due to increased literary and travel opportunities.

Finally, the period of Modern English (1700 – today), which we still experience nowadays, evolved.  The Industrial Revolution and the rise of the British Empire from the 18th until the early 20th century led to the expansion of the English language. At its peak, the British Empire occupied one quarter of the world’s land surface, and many words from different countries and languages were adopted into English.

Nowadays, English is spoken extensively in different parts of the world. In total, 508 million people speak English. Due to its political, economic, scientific, cultural and military influence, as well as the British colonial expansion since the 18th and 19th centuries, the English language has spread worldwide. Currently, it is the primary language for international discourse and the lingua franca in many regions.
