Characteristics of the Czech language

The Czech language, which was formerly known as Bohemian, is a West Slavic language of the Czech-Slovak group belonging to the Indo-Germanic language family. There are over 10 million Czech speakers, and it is the official language in the Czech Republic.

Like many other Indo-Germanic languages, Czech is a fusional language, meaning that the endings of words define several characteristics of the word. Furthermore, it consists of seven cases and three genders making it even trickier to learn for beginners.

The pronunciation in Czech is according to the writing, so each letter stands for a single sound. Once you have learned to pronounce all the letters, you will find the pronunciation and reading easy.

The Czech language uses the Latin alphabet. However, there are additional letters with the hacek symbol: á, é, í, š, ž, č, ř, and ň. These letters are used to express sounds in Czech that cannot be represented by Latin letters and are also used to differentiate between the different vowels.

Brief history of the Czech language

Czech is a Slavic language, as it evolved from the old Slavic language, the so called Proto-Slavic, at the end of the first millennium. The oldest records of the Czech language were found in German and Latin texts of the 12th century. During the Old Czech period from the 11th to the 14th century there was no standardised Czech language.

During the 14th century with Charles IV as emperor the Czech culture flourished but soon afterwards the Polish people had difficult times during the Hussite Wars. When the Austrian Habsburg dynasty was introduced, the Czech language declined gradually, with German becoming an elitist language.

However, the literature became increasingly homogenous during the Middle Czech period from the 15th to the 16th century, thanks to the religious reformer Jan Hus who accomplished huge innovations within the Czech orthography. The Czech bible translation in 1593 then became a template for the standardised Czech language.

The German language again became the official language during the Nazi occupation within the Second World War. All official documentation, banknotes and street signs were first set up in German and then afterwards in Czech. The most German-speaking border areas were occupied. However, after the Second World War, the Czech language arose again.

Czech has been an official language of the European Union since 1st May of 2004.
